The One-Ingredient Ground Beef Trick For Better Browning

– 1 lb (450g) ground beef – 1/2 tsp baking soda

Ingredients

Prepare the Baking Soda Solution: In a small bowl, mix 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda with 1 tablespoon of water. Stir until the baking soda is fully dissolved. This solution will help the ground beef brown more effectively by raising the pH level, which reduces moisture loss.

Combine with Ground Beef: Place the ground beef in a large bowl. Pour the baking soda solution over the meat and gently mix with your hands or a spoon to ensure even distribution. Let the beef sit for 15-20 minutes. This resting period allows the baking soda to work its magic, enhancing the browning process.

Preheat the Pan: While the beef is resting, preheat a large skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat. Make sure the pan is hot before adding the beef, as this helps achieve a good sear.

Add the Ground Beef: After the resting period, add the ground beef to the hot skillet. Spread it out in an even layer, allowing maximum contact with the hot surface. Avoid stirring immediately to give the beef a chance to brown properly.

Let It Brown: Allow the ground beef to cook undisturbed for 3-4 minutes. This initial period of undisturbed cooking is crucial for developing a good sear and achieving better browning.

Break and Stir: After the beef has browned on one side, use a spatula to break it up into smaller pieces. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the beef is evenly browned all over. This should take an additional 5-7 minutes.
